Nia Lynn's The Bannau Trio

"One could be forgiven, in the current climate, for thinking that an album with a singer on it is yet another " singer's album" but it is clear from the very first track of this beautifully crafted collection of songs from Nia Lynn and her Bannau Trio that this album is so much more.

By choosing, on her debut album no less, to place herself within such a demanding improvisational framework Nia has made an assured statement of intent. She is without any doubt a musician's singer - fearlessly interactive and yet able at the same time to display a telling vulnerability.

This is very much trio music - equally shared with a refreshing generosity and sensitivity on all sides. It begs the question " just who is accompanying whom?" as the traditional roles of " singer, accompanist, soloist" are constantly redefined in each track

The two original songs by Nia Lynn help to give this album a strong contemporary edge. They are in striking contrast to the rest of the material and yet hear how these three musicians are able to move between standard and original repertoire and still maintain their strong ensemble sound. Each song in this collection is performed with equal clarity and understanding and always with a feeling of respect for the material - both old and new. It is in the new songs, however, that we are given a tantalizing glimpse of where this Bannau trio could go in the future."
